Ohio Transgender Youth Abandoned in Damning Day for Ohio House as Republicans Override HB68 Veto
COLUMBUS, OH — Today, Ohio’s anti-equality majority in the state House overrode Governor DeWine’s veto of House Bill 68, thereby sending it back to the Senate, where a vote is expected later this month. The discriminatory bill prohibits transgender youth from accessing best practice, medically necessary health care in defiance of the expert advice of every major medical association. The law also bans those young people from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity. In the wake of the December veto, former President Donald Trump attacked Governor DeWine, urging the state legislature to convene quickly and vote to override him. They acquiesced, returning early to pass HB 68 into law……
DeWine Orders Ohio to Create New Rules Restricting Gender-Affirming Care
On Friday, Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine issued a series of executive orders that aim to restrict gender-affirming care for transgender people of all ages in the state.
DeWine issued the edicts one week after vetoing a legislative bill that would have banned many forms of gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
DeWine’s orders would completely ban gender-affirming surgery for anyone under 18 years of age. Such surgeries for trans youth are incredibly rare and are typically utilized only in extreme cases in which alternative options for care have already been exhausted…….
Ohio Republicans introduce the ‘Protect All Students Act.’ And of course, it’s about restricting bathroom use, not guns
A fourth hearing was held on Wednesday for HB 183, a bill in the Statehouse to ban trans individuals from using multi-person restrooms and locker rooms in Ohio’s schools–kindergarten through college–that correspond to their gender identity.
Members of the state Higher Education Committee heard testimony from Reps. Beth Lear (R-Galena) and Adam Bird (R-New Richmond), the bill’s sponsors. The hearing occurred just a few hours before their full House session to override Governor Mike DeWine’s veto of HB 68, the bill that would ban gender-affirming care.
Reps. Lear and Bird introduced key changes and additions to HB 183, including:
- Renaming the bill the “Protect All Students Act.” It is still solely about bathrooms.
- Changing the definition of “biological sex” to have the exact same language as HB 68.
- Banning all colleges from constructing, establishing or maintaining a multi-occupancy facility that is designated as “nongendered, multigendered, or open to all genders.” Multiple colleges in Ohio maintain these spaces currently and HB 183 would force their redesignation.
The 40-minute hearing featured dueling Bible verses, rampant transphobia and some bizarre anecdotes.
Here are 20 of the most memorable quotes from the hearing.
